Olde English Bulldogge Rare Colors

Lilac, Blue, Blue tri, chocolate, chocolate tri, black tri are all considered to be rare bulldog colors and presently the highest priced Olde English Bulldogge puppies on the market. Most breeders use genetic slang for the inheritance patters of the color genes. The breeder terminology is misleading and often incorrect. For example there is no such thing as a tri carrier or a quad carrier!! The correct term is heterozygous or homozygous for each specific gene. If the dog is a blue we say his phenotyope is blue. This is due to 2 recessive genes on the D locus (dd). The dog is not a carrier if they have the recessive phenotype so you can not be a blue dog and be a blue carrier. Carrier refers to the genes only. Carriers have just one copy of the blue gene and are not blue in their coat color Dd. A blue tri dog would be kk (non brindle) atat (tan points) and blue dilution gene (dd). These recessive combinations are called homozygous because the dog has 2 copies of the recessive gene. They could be a carrier for chocolate which is the b gene if one of their parents was chocolate (Bb). In genetics we say they are heterozygous (carrier) if they have 2 copies of the gene one dominant and 1 recessive. There is no such thing as a black carrier. Black is a default color and due to the expression of the K gene. If they have 1 dominant K gene they are solid black like a black lab. If they have 2 recessive k genes they have black in their coat but can also express the A genes which are the tan genes and tan point genes. White coloration is due to the S gene and it is the result of incomplete dominance. If you have any questions about rare color genetics please contact me.
